Reds infielder Matt McLain, sidelined since July 10 with a left calf strain, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday.
Batting second and playing shortstop, McLain went 1-for-3 with an RBI double before being removed for a defensive replacement in the bottom of the seventh.
In 83 games played this season, McLain is hitting .190 (.328 SLG) with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.
