Mejia, Fulmer among prospects to watch

April 12th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: (Indians' No. 2), Akron vs. Trenton (6:35 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Mejia has, unsurprisingly, hit safely in his first five games with Akron to begin his Double-A career. The 21-year-old switch-hitter, ranked 37th on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list, has gone 8-for-18 in those contests, with five doubles and five RBIs. He's also thrown out three attempted basestealers in as many chances.

Pitcher to watch:Kyle Funkhouser (Tigers' No. 6), West Michigan at Dayton (7 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Funkhouser, 23, was exceptional in his full-season debut for Class A West Michigan, as he allowed just one hit in five innings while striking out nine. A fourth-round Draft pick out of Louisville in 2016, Funkhouser pitched to a 2.65 ERA in 37 1/3 innings (13 starts) during his professional debut last summer in the New York-Penn League.

Duel of the day: (White Sox No. 5) vs. (Rays' No. 8), Charlotte at Durham (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Fulmer, No. 68 on the Top 100, recorded the win in his season debut for Triple-A Charlotte, tossing six innings of two-run ball against Norfolk on April 7. The right-hander scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five in the outing.

Hu was similarly impressive in his season debut for Durham, surrendering one earned run on five hits in five innings against Gwinnett. In 25 starts for Double-A Montgomery last season, the 23-year-old right-hander posted a 2.75 ERA and a 114-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 147 1/3 innings.
