NEW YORK -- Despite their injury-laden roster and offensive struggles, the Mets have no interest in a reunion with former shortstop Jose Reyes, according to multiple published reports.
The Rockies on Wednesday designated Reyes for assignment following the completion of his 51-game suspension for domestic abuse, and subsequent Minor League rehab assignment. Once Reyes clears waivers, any team will be able to sign him for the pro-rated big league minimum. But the Mets will not be among those showing interest.
Along with the public-relations issues of signing Reyes, the Mets don't have a need up the middle. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has been one of their most consistent performers, and second baseman Neil Walker remains one of their top power hitters. If anything, the Mets may consider at some point moving Walker to third base and promoting second-base prospect Dilson Herrera.
None of those potential machinations involve Reyes, a four-time All-Star with the Mets from 2003-11. He hit .292 with 81 homers, 99 triples and 370 stolen bases over those nine seasons, but the Mets did not pursue Reyes when he hit free agency after the 2011 season. They struggled to find a capable shortstop replacement until signing Cabrera to a two-year deal this winter.
Reyes, meanwhile, bounced from the Marlins to the Blue Jays and to the Rockies. He was arrested on Oct. 31, 2015, in Maui, Hawaii, for an alleged domestic-abuse incident in a hotel where he and his wife, Katherine, were staying. Police dropped the charges because his wife did not cooperate with the investigation, but Major League Baseball subsequently issued Reyes a suspension.
