A day after allegations of inappropriate and lewd behavior toward five women in the sports media industry became public, the Angels suspended pitching coach Mickey Callaway on Tuesday, pending an investigation with Major League Baseball.

The allegations spanned at least five years and three teams, according to the report, published Monday night by The Athletic. The five women spoke on the condition of not being identified and told their stories of Callaway’s unwanted advances. It included Callaway sending shirtless photos of himself and asking one journalist for nude photos. He also allegedly told one reporter he’d give her inside information about the team in exchange for going out for drinks. He also “thrust his crotch near the face of a reporter as she interviewed him," according to the report. 

Callaway, 45, was previously the pitching coach with the Indians from 2013-17, and manager of the Mets from 2018-19. He was hired by the Angels as pitching coach before the 2020 season. 

The Angel released a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

"Late yesterday we were made aware of the allegations reported in The Athletic. This morning we suspended Mickey Callaway, and will work closely with MLB to conduct a full investigation."

The Angels had previously released a statement through club spokesperson Marie Garvey on Monday night, when the reports first surfaced. 

"The behavior being reported violates the Angels Organization's values and policies. We take this very seriously and will conduct a full investigation with MLB." 

The suspension of Callaway comes less than two weeks after the Mets fired newly hired general manager Jared Porter for sending inappropriate text messages to a female reporter.
