DETROIT -- Michael Mahtook's walk-off single in the ninth decided a Friday night pitching duel at Comerica Park and ended the Tigers' six-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the White Sox.
"It's been a struggle, that's been no secret," Mahtook said of the Tigers' third win in September. "But everybody in here, they want to do well, they want to compete, they want to play the game right. To come out and get a win like that, it says a lot about our guys."

Anibal Sanchez and Carson Fulmer dueled to no-decisions with six innings of one-run ball each, including 11 strikeouts for Sanchez. Tyler Collins' seventh-inning solo homer put the Tigers in front, but Matt Davidson handed Shane Greene his first blown save as Tigers closer with a game-tying single in the eighth.

"He showed a lot of composure today," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said of Fulmer, who turned in a second consecutive quality start. "He continues to grow in that department. I think his maturity, his calmness are starting to surface a little bit. He's a pretty excitable guy, has a lot of energy, but I think he's keeping it under control."

Ninth-inning walks to Jeimer Candelario and Collins, the latter with two outs, set up Mahtook -- playing for the first time in a week thanks to injuries -- to be the star against Juan Minaya, whose wild pitch moved up both runners. With first base open, Minaya got Mahtook to chase a full-count slider off the plate, but Mahtook connected with a ball up the middle.
"I went into that last at-bat just trying to put a good swing on it," Mahtook said of his first career game-ending hit. "I didn't have to hit a home run or hit the ball really hard. I just had to find a hole and I was able to do that. … I was just looking for a pitch over the plate. That slider may have been a little bit off and away, but I felt like I was on pitches all night and I was able to put one through."
Renteria was hoping Minaya would be able to get out of the jam in the ninth so the heart of the Chicago order would have a chance in extra innings, but praised Minaya for the many roles he has taken on this season.
"[Minaya] has been doing a very nice job for us since we've used him in many different roles," Renteria said. "We've closed him, we've set him up, he's been a bit of a fireman. I think he left a breaking ball out. Give credit to Mahtook, who stayed on a pitch that was up and over and he was able to not do too much and hit it up the middle and end the ballgame."

Moncada homers again: A day after Yoan Moncada put up a homer, four hits and two walks in the series opener, he was back at it Friday, jumping on a Sanchez cutter over the plate and sending it 398 feet for his second solo homer in as many games, this one providing a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Timely Tyler: Collins hadn't gone deep for the Tigers since a two-homer game against the O's on May 17, and wasn't called back to the big leagues until they were running low on healthy outfielders last week. But after striking out in his first two at-bats, he sent a first-pitch fastball from Gregory Infante out to right field for a 2-1 lead in the seventh.

Friday's win leaves the season series at 9-8 in favor of the White Sox, with two games remaining. The White Sox haven't won a season series against the Tigers since 2008, when they won 12 of 18. They split the 2009 series, 9-9, before Detroit went 79-51 against Chicago from 2010 to 2016.
UPON FURTHER REVIEW
The Tigers challenged an eighth-inning hit-by-pitch of Jose Abreu, arguing that Alex Wilson's pitch hit the knob of Abreu's bat before his hands. After a 40-second review, the call stood, putting Abreu on first base for the eventual tying run.

White Sox:Reynaldo Lopez (1-3, 4.76 ERA) gets the start in Saturday's 5:10 p.m. CT game at Comerica Park. He's looking to build on his first win in a White Sox uniform after allowing three earned runs in six innings at Kansas City on Tuesday.
Tigers:Myles Jaye (1-1, 6.75 ERA) will make his second Major League start when he takes the mound against the White Sox at 6:10 p.m. ET. Jaye allowed seven runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings Monday.
