DeShields' HR robbery earns him Play of Week

September 3rd, 2019

Major League Baseball selected Rangers outfielder Delino DeShields' home run robbery against the Angels on Wednesday as the Play of the Week presented by W.B. Mason.

Texas and Los Angeles were scoreless with one out in the third inning Wednesday when Angels outfielder Brian Goodwin connected on Rangers starter Ariel Jurado’s 1-2 pitch with a 98.1 mph exit velocity and an ideal 26-degree launch angle, per Statcast, to drive the ball a projected 393 feet toward the center-field wall. But DeShields was ready, ranging 63 feet before settling in front of the wall, timing his jump and leaping to snag the ball over the barrier and pulling it back into play for a sensational catch.

“It almost looked like he knew exactly what was going to happen when that ball was hit,” said Rangers television broadcaster Tom Grieve. It was the Angels’ best scoring chance, and DeShields took it away as Texas earned a 3-0 victory on the road.

“I deked him a little bit. That’s my boy,” DeShields said of Goodwin, whom he knows from their days as frequent opponents in the Minor Leagues. “I caught it, and the first thing I did was look at my glove to make sure it was there. And once I saw it, I was like, ‘I’m about to play with him.’”

DeShields playfully bit the ball as he carried it back to the diamond, earning himself a good-natured smile and point from Goodwin on the basepaths.

DeShields was optioned to Triple-A earlier this season, but he’s come back to rank among the Major Leagues’ best defenders. He entered Tuesday with nine Outs Above Average (OAA), per Statcast, putting him in a tie for sixth among all MLB outfielders. He also remains one of the sport’s 30 fastest players with a 29.4 feet per second average sprint speed on the basepaths.
