MLB announces revised 2022 regular-season schedule

March 16th, 2022

Major League Baseball on Wednesday announced the revised schedule for the 2022 regular season, which will officially begin on Thursday, April 7 with nine Opening Day contests, including seven divisional matchups. Eleven games are scheduled for Friday, April 8th, and the first full slate of 15 games is scheduled for Saturday, April 9.

Under the revised schedule, which features rescheduled dates for the first two series (91 contests) originally slated for March 31st – April 7th, the regular season has been extended by three days with the final day of the season now scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th. Each Club’s originally scheduled opening series will now largely take place during the additional three days, while the remainder of rescheduled games will take place throughout the season on mutual off-days and/or via doubleheaders during another scheduled series between Clubs. Overall, the revised schedule features 31 doubleheaders across the 2022 season. Particular items to note include:

  • The Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics will play a traditional doubleheader in Detroit on Tuesday, May 10th. Oakland will serve as the home team during game one, making up the game from Monday, April 4th, and Detroit will serve as the home team during game two, which is the originally scheduled game on May 10th.
  • The Tigers and Minnesota Twins had been scheduled to play a split doubleheader in Detroit on Saturday, July 23rd. Under the revised schedule, this has been changed to a single game to accommodate a traditional doubleheader between the Tigers and Athletics in Oakland on Thursday, July 21st. As a result, the Tigers and Twins will now play a split doubleheader on Tuesday, May 31st in Detroit.
  • Five additional games have been scheduled for Thursday, July 21st following the All-Star break, joining the scheduled game between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles. The five additional games include: the aforementioned Detroit at Oakland doubleheader; Texas Rangers at Miami Marlins; and New York Yankees at Houston Astros (doubleheader).
