Karns feeling good after throwing side session
Right-hander not concerned by soreness
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Right-handed pitcher Nate Karns said he was good to go after throwing a side session on Saturday.
Karns missed his scheduled Friday start against the Yankees because of fatigue in his right arm. He told reporters his arm was slowly recovering from his last start on Monday, when he was roughed up and couldn’t get out of the second inning in a 7-1 loss to the Twins.
Karns, 31, said he wasn’t really concerned by the soreness. He noted the quick turnaround from his previous start. He had been scheduled to pitch on the fourth day, rather than the normal fifth day.
“It was just from the volume that we were throwing," Karns said. “I wouldn't call it fatigue, but I would say we did several bullpens, live BPs, more bullpens, then right into games. It was just kind of like -- I don't even know how to describe it. It was just caught up in the volume, getting my legs under me, so to say."
The 31-year-old has been sidelined throughout the past two years. He missed all of last season to recover from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, which he underwent in July 2017.
He emphasized he was not dealing with an injury, simply, “I just don't feel as recharged as I would normally after a game.”
Karns was the Orioles only Major League free-agent signing this season.
Yaz the younger
Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Hall of Famer and Boston legend Carl Yastrzemski, was among those making the 90-mile trip from Sarasota to Fort Myers on Saturday. He entered the game in the seventh inning as the center fielder, batting once and reaching base on an error. Granddad was in attendance.
The younger Yaz was signed out of Vanderbilt in 2013 and has spent his entire professional career in the Minor Leagues.
On the move
You can’t blame second baseman Hanser Alberto if he doesn’t know whether he is coming or going. Since Nov. 2 when the Yankees got him on waivers, he has been designated for assignment once and claimed on waivers four times.
Now the Orioles have him back. They claimed him Friday from the Giants, who had picked him up when the O's had DFA’d him.The Orioles had originally claimed Alberto on waivers from the Yankees in January.
