Nats fall to Padres in suspended game

July 18th, 2021

WASHINGTON -- Ryan Zimmerman reached double digits in home runs this season when he hammered a three-run dinger off Blake Snell in the Nationals’ 10-4 loss to the Padres on Sunday. It was the resumption of Saturday’s game that was suspended in the middle of sixth inning because of a shooting incident outside of Nationals Park.

Zimmerman, 36, has been embracing the part-time first base role in his 16th Major League season. His 10 homers on the year are just three shy of his entire 2018 total. With 280 career home runs, Zimmerman ranks No. 11 on the active players leaderboard.

Though he provided an offensive spark in the third inning, the Nationals were overpowered by the Padres, who tallied 34 runs and 40 hits in their first two games of the series. Southpaw Patrick Corbin allowed six runs off 10 hits, four walks and three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in his 18th start of the season.
