LOS ANGELES -- Nick Ahmed's first-inning inside-the-park home run Wednesday night was just the latest example of the D-backs' relentless attitude, but it just never ended up being the spark toward another victory over the rival Dodgers.

Ahmed ripped Alex Wood's seventh pitch of the game off the top of the wall in center field and was off to the races. His sixth home run of the season was helped by the fact that center fielder Enrique Hernandez hit the wall at full speed and crumpled to the warning track as the ball rebounded toward the infield.

Right fielder Yasiel Puig tracked the ball and fired it to infielder Austin Barnes, whose relay throw to catcher Yasmani Grandal was too late to cut down a diving Ahmed. The Dodgers did not ask for a replay review on the close play.

"I knew I hit it good and when I saw it wasn't caught I was thinking three [bases]," Ahmed said. "I didn't realize it had bounced so far back. I just saw [coach Tony Perezchica] waving me at third and I was just trying to go as fast as I could."

Ahmed went around the bases in 15.43 seconds, the fastest time tracked this season by Statcast™. It was Ahmed's first career inside-the-park home run and the first one for a D-backs player since Daniel Descalso on Aug. 17 last season at Houston.

On Tuesday night, it was Descalso who provided the excitement, with his three-run home run in the 12th inning the difference in an 8-5 victory over the Dodgers. After the 6-3 defeat Wednesday, Arizona still has eight victories in 12 games against the Dodgers.

The D-backs had three inside-the-park home runs last season and have 15 all-time.

According to STATS Inc., Ahmed's home run was the first of the inside-the-park variety against a Dodgers left-hander since the late Tony Gwynn's grand slam off Mark Guthrie on June 26, 1997. Wednesday would have been Gwynn's 58th birthday.
