Arenado denies Reds hope with defensive gem

DENVER -- Much like Batman, Spider-Man or any other hero the world looks to, Gold Glove Man -- known in Colorado as -- never takes a day off from saving the day.

Arenado broke out in his purple-pinstriped costume in the seventh inning Sunday. And his diving, rolling backhanded grab of Yasiel Puig’s hard 112.4-mph liner off closer Wade Davis went for the final out of the 10-9 victory over the Reds at Coors Field.

Manager Bud Black gave Arenado, a six-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award and two-time Platinum Glove Award winner, as well as All-Star outfielder Charlie Blackmon, a day out of the lineup. They, along with shortstop Trevor Story and outfielder David Dahl, participated in the All-Star Game, and didn’t have the same break as others. And the Rockies have a doubleheader Monday with the Giants, as well.

But despite sending nine to the plate in the first inning and 10 in the fifth, it was a wild, one-run game. Arenado popped out into short right field in the eighth in his only at-bat.

After Davis struck out the first two batters of the ninth, Arenado was there when the Rockies needed him most.

“Those are emotional, and those are hard-fought games and they’re taxing,” said Black, whose team won the three-game series with the Reds. “And in the middle of the summer, when it’s hot, getting close to 100-plus games and the dog days set in, these are good wins.”

Had Puig’s hit gone for the extra bases that seemed certain, manager David Bell’s Reds would have had momentum.

“[Arenado] can really play third base and you’re right, that was a great play to end the game,” Bell said. “Yasiel had a good at-bat right there. It looked like he was going to hit a ball hard. He wasn’t able to get it up in the air, but you can’t control that. All you can do is hit it hard and he did. Arenado made a great play to end the game.”
