NEW YORK -- Prior to Sunday's game against the Yankees, the Orioles recalled right-handed pitcher Logan Verrett and selected the contract of righty Jimmy Yacabonis, both from Triple-A Norfolk.
Stefan Crichton was optioned to Norfolk and Edwin Jackson was designated for assignment. The moves come after both Crichton and Jackson pitched on Friday and Saturday, allowing multiple runs in each outing.
"We made a lot of mistakes, and this is the price you pay," manager Buck Showalter said. "I don't think we've sent anybody out this year that was pitching well."
In eight innings for the Orioles earlier this season, Verrett was 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA. But the righty allowed three runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings in Sunday's 14-3 loss to the Yankees. Yacabonis struggled in his MLB debut, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one.
Yacabonis, the Orioles' No. 29 prospect, said he found out he was getting called up around midnight Sunday morning before flying here from Durham, N.C., where Norfolk played Saturday night.
"You always want to stay optimistic, always want to be positive about things," Yacabonis said.
Yacabonis grew up in New Jersey and was a Yankees fan during the team's championship run in the late 1990s. He had family at Sunday's game.
It's unclear how long Verrett and Yacabonis will remain in the Major Leagues. However, it's expected they'll be around for at least a few days with reliever Darren O'Day and closer Zach Britton on the disabled list, especially given the Orioles' recent dependence on their bullpen.
Britton is scheduled to throw live batting practice Thursday, and if all goes well, he will pitch in his first Minor League rehab game on June 19 with Class A short-season Aberdeen.
Machado tests sore wrist
Manny Machado was scheduled to throw and hit Sunday, Showalter said, indicating that unless there's a setback, Machado will avoid the disabled list.
