BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed Steve Pearce on the 60-day disabled list with a right flexor mass strain on Sunday, ending his season. Manager Buck Showalter said Pearce is contemplating surgery, which would require 4-6 months of rehabilitation.
"It's frustrating, especially with where we are at in the season," Pearce said earlier this week. "We are so close to the playoffs. Just the timing of it, it's just not really ideal. It's very unfortunate."
Pearce, acquired from the Rays on Aug. 1, has been dealing with discomfort in his right elbow and forearm all year. He's a free agent at the end of the season, so he may not be back with the Orioles.
"I think Stevie knows how much we like him," Showalter said. "I'm sure other clubs will covet him, too. But you get first shot at it, if you're so inclined."
The Orioles made two other roster moves Sunday, reinstating right-hander Darren O'Day from the 15-day DL and selecting the contract of first baseman Trey Mancini from Triple-A Norfolk.
O'Day was placed on the DL on Aug. 13 with a right shoulder rotator cuff strain, but he will provide a big lift at the back end of the O's bullpen. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out two in an inning of relief in the O's 2-1 win over the Rays on Sunday. While he has a 4.13 ERA over 31 games this year, he pitched to a sub-2.00 ERA the past two seasons.
Mancini, the club's No. 5 prospect per MLBPipeline.com, hit .282/.357/.458 with 26 doubles and 20 home runs in 142 games between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk this season.

Mancini said he got the call Saturday night when he was out to dinner with his parents in Sarasota, Fla., where he had been working out.
"It's a dream come true," the 24-year-old said of his first-ever callup. "It's the reason I've been playing baseball since I was 4 years old, was to one day make the Major Leagues. It hasn't all really hit me yet 'cause it all happened really fast."
Showalter had been contemplating calling up an outfielder, but "Dariel Álvarez's wife is having complications with her pregnancy," the manager said, so he wasn't an option. Plus, he acknowledged the benefits of exposing Mancini to the atmosphere of meaningful September baseball.
