Wright frustrated by 5-run outing vs. Twins

O's rotation candidate struggles with command of sinker

March 25th, 2017

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Mike Wright was hoping to be better than he showed on Friday night. The right-hander, who allowed five earned runs over two innings in a 5-5 tie with the Twins, is still in the mix for the Orioles' final rotation spot, but opportunities are dwindling this spring.
"'Feeling good' and 'my stuff is there' isn't going to get me on the team," said Wright, who allowed all five runs in the second inning. "So yeah, it stings a bit being this late in camp, but it's still camp. It's not going to affect my record or change anything with the regular season, so that's still a positive."
Wright, who allowed seven hits and a walk to balloon his spring ERA to 8.38 ERA, said he's physically and mentally in a good place. But he knows he needs to show that more when it matters.
"I didn't feel like my sinker was as good as it has been the past three or four games, but I still feel like I did a decent job locating," he said. "That's obviously not going to be the case when I go back and look at film, but it felt good."
Asked if he was frustrated that he hasn't been able to complete four innings in a spring game (though he did in a B game), Wright wrung his hands and said, "Yeah, that's frustrating."
