O's set broadcast team, spring TV schedule

March 16th, 2022

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Orioles’ broadcast team on MASN will feature a bit of shifting in 2022 -- and they’re coming to a television screen near you soon.

The club announced on Wednesday afternoon that three games on its Grapefruit League slate will be broadcast on MASN, as well as seven additional games set exclusively for the airwaves of Hearst's 98 Rock FM & WBAL NewsRadio AM/FM, its new flagship station. The O's game against the Red Sox on March 24 will be broadcast on both television and radio.

The other two television-exclusive games will come on March 30 against the Rays and April 1 against the Phillies.

And while those calling games this spring and regular season will be familiar, some friendly faces will be in new roles.

Kevin Brown, who has been with the team in a roving status since 2019, has solidified his role and takes over as MASN’s lead play-by-play voice this season. He will be flanked by former Oriole favorite Ben McDonald, entering his fifth full year in the booth, and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, who is embarking on his 30th season at MASN and 59th as a member of the organization.

On radio, Geoff Arnold will remain as the lead play-by-play voice in his third season in the O’s broadcast booth following a long stint with the former Baltimore affiliate in the Frederick Keys. He will be joined by trailblazing broadcaster Melanie Newman, who will continue in her variety of roles on both TV and radio, as well as former Orioles pitcher Dave Johnson.

Others in utility roles are Rob Long, who returns as MASN's pre- and postgame host and is entering his fourth year, Scott Garceau, who was the primary play-by-play voice on TV the past two seasons, and Brett Hollander, who will continue as a sideline reporter along with some play-by-play duties and pre- and postgame hosting as well.

Bird seeds

• The Orioles’ Grapefruit League opener, set for Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET against the Blue Jays at Ed Smith Stadium, will be the inaugural broadcast on the O’s new radio flagship. It will be started by right-hander , manager Brandon Hyde said, after the club re-signed him to a Minor League deal this offseason.

• Utility man , signed to a Minor League deal on Tuesday, reported to O’s camp, fully recovered from July surgery on his left thumb that sidelined him for a majority of the 2021 season with the Rockies. Opportunity was chief among his interests in joining Baltimore, and while he’s among the top contenders for the starting shortstop role, he packed gloves for every position -- save for catcher.

“I think it's just a good opportunity for me to play -- it really is,” Owings said. “Just getting here yesterday and just being around the guys, the coaches, I really like the way the organization is going. … I was impressed yesterday showing up here and just seeing what everybody's working on and the intensity of what's going on.”
