PEORIA, Ariz. -- Left-hander Christian Friedrich, who led the Padres in starts last season, has been battling general arm soreness this spring, putting his status for the Opening Day roster in some doubt.
Friedrich is competing for one of two available rotation spots in camp. But Padres manager Andy Green said Friedrich felt "overall soreness from the shoulder down through the triceps through the elbow," following his most recent appearance on Friday against the Dodgers.
Green indicated that Friedrich simply hasn't felt right during the first month of camp. He missed his scheduled bullpen session on Sunday and will likely miss his next Cactus League appearance, as well.
"He's backed off his typical throwing progression at this point in time," Green said. "... Any time you have to make a change at this late a date in camp, when you start getting closer, it starts to jeopardize the possibility of being on the Opening Day roster."

If a healthy Friedrich were to miss out on a rotation place, he is a frontrunner for a bullpen job. The 29-year-old southpaw posted a 4.80 ERA in 24 games, 23 of which were starts, last year, his first season as a full-time starter since 2012.
Friedrich has allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings this spring. He was sharp over three scoreless frames against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Worth noting
• Jhoulys Chacin and Yangervis Solarte will return to Padres camp on Monday after their run with Team Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic. Chacin's next start will come Friday, though he could pitch an inning on Monday night. Should the Padres keep Chacin on a normal progression, he would be in line to start Opening Day against the Dodgers on April 3.
• Outfielder Manuel Margot (left knee soreness) isn't in jeopardy of missing Opening Day, according to Green. The Padres' top prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com, missed the past two weeks, but he could return by next weekend.
"He's still got enough time," Green said. "I think if you start pushing past Friday and Saturday without getting him on the baseball field, then it becomes in danger for making the Opening Day roster. I think there's still enough time for him, given his current trajectory."

• Carter Capps pitched one inning in a back-field game on Sunday, as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery last March. He struggled a bit, allowing a run on two hits and two walks. It was Capps' second back-field appearance, and Green noted that the righty reliever is very close to seeing his first Cactus League action.
• Ryan Schimpf, who is battling left oblique tightness, went through a full workout on Sunday and is slated to receive at least four at-bats in a back-field game on Monday. If all goes according to plan, Schimpf could play in Wednesday's Cactus League game.
