SAN DIEGO -- On a day that featured the first triple play in Petco Park history, it seems ironic that defense proved costly for the Padres.
But with the Phillies on the good side of that historic moment -- as well as winning side of a 6-5 game -- Padres manager Andy Green talked about how the gloves didn't help San Diego much Sunday afternoon.
"Dug a little bit of a hole today. Defense was, sloppy, probably the best descriptor of it," he said. "Cost us a couple times pretty dearly."
The first miscue for the Friars came in the first inning, when Ryan Schimpf fielded a ground ball from Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco out of a shifted defensive position. Playing from the default shortstop spot, Schimpf overthrew Wil Myers at first, and allowed Franco to reach with one out.
"I just wasn't in a good position to make a throw," Schimpf said. "Just stopped my feet. That's all on me. Not the position of the shift or whatever."
While Schimpf's error was harmless enough -- Franco was stranded on first base -- another poor throw allowed the game-winning run to cross the plate in the seventh inning.
Rookie shortstop José Rondón overthrew Myers after backhanding a ground ball from Phillies leadoff hitter César Hernández, who was awarded second after the ball went out of play. Hernandez later scored on Tommy Joseph's pinch-hit single to give the Phillies their sixth run of the game.

"[Rondon] makes a nice backhand play against a plus runner and kind of gets underneath the throw," Green said.
In the fourth inning, Alex Dickerson misplayed Freddy Galvis' double to left field, allowing Carlos Ruiz to score.

When asked about the defensive issues that have become more commonplace over the past few games, Green pointed to the fact that his team -- which has been the second-worst defensive team in baseball, according to FanGraphs.com -- is still learning on the go.
"You know, you look across where our errors were today and you got a young guy out at shortstop, in the Major Leagues for the first time," he said. "… You got Ryan Schimpf in a position where he hasn't spent a lot of time through his Minor League career, at shortstop in a shift position…
"There's a pair of our errors right there that I think are just guys not accustomed to being in those situations right now."
Schimpf said the team has been getting more shift reps of late, and that being positioned differently, wasn't an issue. It was simply a matter of continuing to put in the work at spots where you aren't used to playing.
"That's what we're going now with the information we have," he said. "Gotta keep getting better -- anything you do, just keep getting better.
"Stay prepared and take more reps."
