Grounds crew back on track after Petco Park flooding

In its 13-year existence, Petco Park has experienced only two rainouts. Safe to say, there would have been a third Monday, had the Padres been slated for a home game.
A downpour hit San Diego on Sunday night into Monday, covering the city with four inches of rain. At one point, a photo of a soggy Petco Park made its rounds on social media.
But by Tuesday, the sun was shining through, and the Padres' grounds crew had begun resodding the outfield as scheduled. A team spokesperson told MLB.com that this week's rains won't affect any of the preparation for the World Baseball Classic.
On Tuesday, the Padres laid sod for 18,000 square feet -- roughly one-third of the playing field. Resodding had always been slated for this week, and the rains didn't change much schedule-wise. (During Monday's downpour, the field was still covered in dirt from a pair of monster truck rallies.)
The Padres said the minor flooding at Petco Park was the result of rain falling faster than it could drain. The field -- or, technically, dirt -- wasn't submerged for long.
Petco Park will host its first World Baseball Classic game on March 14, a matchup between the winners of Groups C and D. The second-round pool will run from March 14-18, with a potential tiebreaker game slated for March 19.
