Here's Padres' pitching plan following PPD

Lamet to start Tuesday vs. Rox; Darvish, Snell set for Wednesday's doubleheader

May 10th, 2021

The Padres had their series opener in Colorado postponed due to inclement weather on Monday, but it didn't derail their pitching plans much.

Monday's game will be made up on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 12:10 p.m. PT. Meanwhile, who was slated to start on Monday night, will take the ball Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. PT instead.

and , the presumed starters for Games 2 and 3 of the series, will take the ball for Wednesday's doubleheader, in that order. Game 1 is slated for 12:10 with a break of roughly 30 minutes before Game 2. Both games Wednesday are scheduled to be seven innings, as per the rules for the 2021 season.

Lamet's outing Tuesday is unlikely to be a very long one. He pitched just two innings in his most recent start and saw his velocity dip in the second frame of that May 4 outing vs. the Pirates. He and manager Jayce Tingler both chalked that up to rust after Lamet had spent 10 days on the injured list with right forearm tightness. Lamet said he felt healthy afterward.

Still, the Padres will play it cautiously moving forward, and if the dreary weather continues, Lamet's start could be a short one.

"No matter what, Lamet is going to be certainly on a pitch count and an innings count," Tingler said Sunday. "If it is cold, if it's a little bit rainy, we wouldn't be looking for him to go six, seven, anything like that."

The rain and snow is expected to linger into Tuesday, which raises questions about how the Padres would align for Wednesday's doubleheader if Tuesday's game were to be postponed as well. But that's an issue for another day.

For now, the Padres' pitching plans don’t change much with Wednesday's doubleheader because of the scheduled off-day they have on Thursday. That will afford Darvish and Snell proper rest before they take the ball during the Padres' upcoming six-game homestand against the Cardinals and Rockies.
