Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt has been named a 2017 Louisville Slugger® Silver Slugger Award™ recipient for the National League, as announced by Louisville Slugger. The award recognizes the players who were the best offensive producers at each position in both leagues as voted by Major League Baseball managers and coaches with selections based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, as well as the managers' and coaches' general impressions of a player's overall offensive value.
Goldschmidt, who also garnered Silver Slugger honors in 2013 and '15, ranked among NL leaders in runs scored (3rd, 117), RBI (4th, 120), extra-base hits (4th, 73), walks (4th, 94), on-base pct. (5th, .404), OPS (5th, .966) and home runs (T-6th, 36). The 5-time All-Star (2013-17) was 1 of 10 players in the NL with 30 home runs and 100 RBI this season, and became the first player in team history to reach the 30-homer/100-RBI plateau 3 times (also: 2013, '15).
He joins Don Mattingly (1985-87) as the only 2 first basemen in Major League history to win a Silver Slugger and Rawlings® Gold Glove Award in the same season on 3 occasions (also: 2013, '15).
In addition to the Silver Slugger, Goldschmidt was named a finalist for this season's BBWAA NL Most Valuable Player Award, earned his third Gold Glove Award at first base, won the Fielding Bible Award at first base and was selected as the club's Most Valuable Player by the Arizona chapter of the BBWAA.
