PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies spent their Tuesday handing out Thanksgiving Day turkeys to families in need. They will be in the community throughout the rest of the holiday season.
"One of the greatest rewards in life is being able to make a difference in the lives of others," said John Weber, president of Phillies Charities, Inc. "As an organization, we take great pride in giving back to the community and helping those who need it most."
The Phils have raised money and worked in the community throughout the year. Phillies Charities awarded more than $1.2 million in grants to charitable organizations this year. Several events contributed to the grant fund, including the 50/50 drawing at home games and the Phantastic Auction, which featured unique items and fan experiences that raised more than $106,000.
The Phillies Charities 5K drew more than 6,000 runners.
The Phillies Phestival this summer raised $656,500, providing research, patient care and services for ALS patients in the Philadelphia area. Since the Phils adopted ALS as their primary charity in 1984, nearly $17.7 million has been raised to fight the disease.

Other efforts include:
• Through the Phillies RBI League and other initiatives, Philadelphia provided 20,000 children with the opportunity to play baseball and softball throughout the area.
• More than 30,000 children participated in Phanatic About Reading, in which students receive incentives and top performing schools are rewarded with a special assembly featuring the Phanatic.
• About 125,000 tickets were donated to local charitable organizations throughout the area, including 40,000 tickets donated to members of the military and their families.
• The Phillies' "Season of Giving" runs through next month. One of the numerous events includes the annual Bethesda Project Holiday Meal, in which the Phils' front office prepares and serves meals to the homeless at Bethesda Project's Our Brother's Place in Philadelphia.

• The holiday sale and tree lighting is Dec. 2. Sales of autographed and game-used memorabilia benefits Phillies Charities. Manager Gabe Kapler, first baseman and shortstop will make appearances.
• The Phillies Charities holiday party is Dec. 18. Twenty-eight grant recipients will be honored.
