Not surprising that Steve Carlton and Mike Schmidt would be involved when it comes to anniversary moments in Phillies history in years ending with the number 9.
July 4, 1979: Carlton ties a modern NL record with his fifth career one-hitter in a 1-0 win over the New York Mets at Veterans Stadium. Right fielder Elliott Maddox's one-out double in the seventh snaps Carlton's bid for a perfect game. The game took 1:51 to play. … Prior to the game, the Phillies put three starting pitchers -- Dick Ruthven (elbow bone chips), Larry Christenson (collarbone bone spur) and Randy Lerch (broken right wrist) -- on the IL.
July 6, 2009: The Phillies tie club record for most runs scored in the first inning (10) in a 22-1 win over Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park. Thirteen Phillies batted. There were three walks, a hit batter, a single, two doubles and home runs by Shane Victorino, Greg Dobbs and Chase Utley. Nine runs were charged to Johnny Cueto. Jayson Werth added a grand slam in a six-run eighth inning.
July 7, 1979: Schmidt homers in four consecutive at-bats for the second time in his career. Schmidt goes deep in his final at-bat (7th inning) on July 6 vs. San Francisco and connects in his first three at-bats (2nd, 3rd and 6th innings) on this date against the Giants at Veterans Stadium. The Giants win, 8-6, in a game started by Tug McGraw.
July 7, 2009: The streak of 257 consecutive sellouts at Citizens Bank Park begins on this date. It becomes the longest streak in National League history.
July 10, 1979: Pinch-hitter Del Unser sets a Major League record with his third consecutive pinch-hit home run, this one a three-run game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Phillies to a 6-5 win over San Diego. The other two: June 30 (two-out in ninth vs. St. Louis) and July 5 (two out in the seventh vs. New York Mets). All three came at the Vet. … Schmidt’s hottest home run streak includes his seventh home run in his last 15 at bats (five games), which ties an NL record.
July 29, 1989: The Phillies retire Carlton’s No. 32 in pregame ceremony before 47,277 fans at the Vet.
