Phillies Minor League Review: Aug. 22-28

Players of the Week
Player SS Grenny Cumana, Lakewood… The 20-year-old batted .476 (10-21) with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and five runs scored in six games. He registered three consecutive multi-hit games, during which he recorded his fourth four-hit game of the season. Cumana's .294 average ranks seventh in the South Atlantic League, and he is the hardest player in the league to strikeout, averaging just one every 12.45 at-bats. The Venezuela native was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on March 10, 2013.
Pitcher - RHP , Lakewood… Tirado, 21, made one start, holding Greensboro to one run on three hits in 5.0 innings while striking out a career-high 11 batters. He has struck out nine batters or more in four of his last five starts. Since becoming a starter on June 28, Tirado has posted a 6-1 record, 2.47 ERA (13 ER, 47.1 IP) and has struck out 73 batters. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his 10 starts with Lakewood. Tirado was acquired from Toronto along with right-hander in exchange for outfielder on July 31, 2015.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs - International League North Division…80-55, 2nd place… Lehigh Valley went 4-3 last week, winning three of their final four games. They hold a 4.5-game lead in the wild card standings and the second-best record in the International League.
Top hitting performers - 1B/OF batted .400 (12-30) with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI, two walks, eight runs and a 1.121 OPS in seven games… 1B Brock Stassi doubled twice, homered, drove in five runs and walked five times while batting .333 (8-24)… 2B batted .353 (6-17) with two home runs, five RBI and four walks.
Top pitching performers - RHP made two starts, posting a 0.82 ERA (1 ER, 11 IP). He allowed three total hits, one walk and struck out eight batters… RHP struck out seven batters in 7.2 innings of one-run ball on August 25. He has a 1.72 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 52.1 innings with Lehigh Valley… LHP appeared in three games, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and four strikeouts.
Reading Fightin Phils - Eastern League Eastern Division …84-49, 1st place… Despite losing five of their seven games, the Fightins were able to clinch a playoff berth and are 1.5 games ahead of the Trenton Thunder for the top spot in both the division and league. Reading also had OF Dylan Cozens and 1B Rhys Hoskins named to the Eastern League postseason All-Star Team.
Top hitting performers - CF went 5-for-17 (.294) with a double, two home runs, three RBI, two walks and four runs scored… 2B Scott Kingery batted .304 (7-23) in six games with a double, RBI and stolen base… OF Andrew Pullin collected seven hits in 18 at-bats (.389), doubled, walked twice and scored a run.
Top pitching performers - RHP Jesen Therrien struck out eight batters in 4.0 innings over two relief appearances… RHP did not allow a baserunner in either of his games out of the bullpen (3.1 IP).
Clearwater Threshers - Florida State League North Division…39-24, 2ndplace, 78-53 overall… The Threshers won a pair of series last week, taking two of three from both Brevard County and Daytona. They have seven games remaining and are 2.5 games behind Dunedin in the second-half rankings, while their overall record is the best in the league.
Top hitting performers -  OF Jiandido Tromp hit safely in five of his six games, batting .273 (6-22) with a double, two home runs and a team-high seven RBI… INF Drew Stankiewicz was 7-for-20 (.350) with a double, RBI, two walks and a stolen base… CF Carlos Tocci doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored three more while batting .292 (7-24).
Top pitching performers -  LHP Elniery Garcia made one start, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits in 7.0 innings while striking out seven and walking one… LHP Brandon Leibrandt did not allow a run and struck out six batters while allowing only two hits in his only start of the week… RHP Shane Watson held Brevard County to two runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings on August 24.
Lakewood BlueClaws - South Atlantic League Northern Division…39-24, 1st place, 68-64 overall… The BlueClaws, despite starting the season 4-16, managed to climb over the .500 mark for the first time after winning seven of their eight games last week. They allowed two runs or fewer in five of those games. From August 19-26, Lakewood won a franchise-record eight straight contests, and they now have a 3.0-game lead in the division with seven games remaining.
Top hitting performers - SS Grenny Cumana had 10 hits in 21 at-bats (.476), doubled, drove in two runs and stole a base. He was named Phillies Minor League Player of the Week… OF Cornelius Randolph batted .379 (11-29) with a double, triple, five RBI, two walks and eight runs scored. He has multiple hits in six of his last eight games… 3B Jan Hernandez hit three home runs, including two on August 23 for his first multi-homer game of the season. He drove in five runs and batted .318 (7-22).
Top pitching performers - RHP Alberto Tirado struck out a career-high 11 batters in 5.0 innings on August 25, allowing one run on three hits. He was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week… RHP Jose Taveras made two starts, combining to strike out 13 batters and allow just three runs in 12.0 innings pitched… RHP Harold Arauz surrendered one run in 6.0 innings while striking out seven batters in his one start… RHP Seranthony Dominguez tossed 6.0 scoreless frames and allowed just four hits in his start against West Virginia… RHP Franklyn Kilome made one start, throwing 7.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Williamsport Crosscutters - New York-Penn League Pinckney Division…34-33, 3rd place… Williamsport played in eight games last week, going 2-6. They will end their season with three games against Mahoning Valley, three at Batavia and a home-and-home series with State College.
Top hitting performers - 1B Darick Hall slugged .810 for the week after recording five doubles and a home run in six games played. He batted .429 (9-21) with five RBI… OF Juan Luis was 6-for-18 (.333) with a triple, walk and stolen base… C Gregori Rivero batted .385 (5-13) with a double, triple and three RBI in four games.
Top pitching performers -  In two starts, LHP Ranger Suarez tossed 13.1 innings, surrendering three runs while striking out 11 batters… RHP Felix Paulino also made two starts, combining to pitch 12.2 innings with four runs allowed (three earned) and just one walk to 10 strikeouts… In his longest relief outing of the season, RHP Julian Garcia tossed 4.0 scoreless frames with eight strikeouts and one hit allowed… LHP JoJo Romero allowed a run on four hits over 6.0 innings in his only start of the week… LHP Bailey Falter threw 5.0 scoreless innings on August 23, lowering his ERA to 2.96.
GCL Phillies - Gulf Coast League, Northwest Division…41-15, 1st place… The Phillies overtook the Blue Jays for the best record in the Gulf Coast League after winning five of their six games last week. Their .732 winning percentage is the second-best of any affiliated minor league team, domestic or foreign (Dominican Summer League Red Sox 1, .735).
Top hitting performers - INF Jose Antequera hit safely in all five of his games, batting .412 (7-17) with four doubles, an RBI, three walks and two stolen bases… 1B/3B Danny Zardon doubled three times, tripled, drove in five runs and waked twice while batting .316 (6-19)… OF Malvin Matos doubled, homered, drove in three runs, walked four times and stole three bases.
Top pitching performers - RHP Mauricio Llovera struck out seven batters and allowed one run in his 5.0 innings of work on August 26. His scoreless inning streak ended at 22.0 innings… In two games (one start), LHP Will Stewart combined to pitch 10.0 innings with one run allowed on five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts… RHP Sixto Sanchez surrendered just two hits and struck out five in 6.0 scoreless frames. He has a 0.50 ERA (3 ER, 54.0 IP) this season.
