Phillies anniversaries in September

August 29th, 2019

Rewinding anniversary moments and record performances for the month of September in Phillies history ranging from 1919 to 2009, there’s a mixture of names that appear ... Eddie Sanicki, Matt Stairs, Von Hayes, Richie Ashburn, Pete Rose, plus another division title. Oh, and a nine-inning game in under one hour!

September 4, 1999
On a Saturday night at Veterans Stadium, the Cincinnati Reds hit nine home runs in a 22-3 romp before a small crowd of 16,357. It is the most homers ever hit off the Phillies. 3B Aaron Boone, RF Dmitri Young, CF Jeffrey Hammonds, C Ed Taubensee (2), LF Greg Vaughn, 2B Pokey Reese, C Brian Johnson and 3B Mark Lewis hit them.

September 10, 2009
Matt Stairs ties the club record for most pinch-hit home runs in a season with five, connecting with the bases loaded, but Phillies lose to the Nationals in Washington, 8-7. Batting for Brad Lidge in the top of the ninth with the Phillies losing, 8-2, Matt went deep to right-center off Zack Segovia, who originally was a second-round selection by the Phils in 2002.

September 14, 1949
Ed Sanicki hit a three-run homer the first time he stepped into a Major League batter’s box. After entering as a defensive replacement in right field in the seventh inning, Sanicki came to bat for the first time in the ninth inning and homered off the legendary Rip Sewell at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. It capped the Phillies' scoring in a 12-4 win before 3,920 spectators.

September 15, 1989
Von Hayes becomes the first player to hit two homers into the upper deck in right field at the Vet in a single game, the second game of a doubleheader. St. Louis wins, 7-6. Hayes connected in the first and third innings, both off Scott Terry.

September 19, 1959
Richie Ashburn breaks the club record for career hits (2,211) with a seventh-inning single off the first-base bag in a 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Braves at Connie Mack Stadium. Bob Buhl was the Braves' pitcher. Whitey's last hit also came off Buhl, then pitching for the Cubs. It came in his last at-bat in the Majors, when he was with the Mets in 1962. Ashburn broke Ed Delahanty’s club record (1888-89; 1891-1901).

September 28, 1919
In the fastest game ever played in the Major Leagues, it takes the New York Giants 51 minutes to beat the Phillies, 6-1, at the Polo Grounds. Most batters swung at the first pitch and ran the bases at will. This happened in the first game of a season-ending doubleheader. The Giants also won that game, 7-1. Box score in doesn't list a time of game for this one.

September 30, 1979
Pete Rose ends his first season with the Phillies with a big final month. He finishes with a .421 September, collecting 51 hits in 29 games; final average, .331. That’s the most September hits since OF Lefty O’Doul had 55 in 28 games in 1929 when he won the batting title (.398).

September 30, 2009
The Phillies beat Houston, 10-3, at Citizens Bank Park and clinch the National League East Division title for the third straight year and eighth time overall. Kyle Kendrick, who replaced Pedro Martinez (3 runs, 4 innings) in the top of the fifth winning, was the winner. He threw three scoreless innings and was followed with similar efforts by Chad Durbin, Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge. Jimmy Rollins had a double and triple, Raul Ibanez a home run (No. 34).
