MIAMI -- The Pirates scratched right fielder Gregory Polanco from Wednesday night's lineup at Marlins Park due to left foot discomfort.
Polanco fouled a ball off his foot during his ninth-inning at-bat against Marlins closer A.J. Ramos on Tuesday night. The right fielder checked out fine after the game, head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said, but he woke up Wednesday morning with pain in his foot.
"You wait and see. It's a fluid situation," Tomczyk said. "He came in with some increased discomfort, so we're making sure we take the necessary steps to ensure his short- and long-term health."
Polanco didn't undergo any X-rays on Tuesday night, Tomczyk said, but he was sent to a doctor for further evaluation on Wednesday afternoon.
Polanco has been the Pirates' most productive hitter this season, batting .310/.386/.556 with eight home runs, while leading the team with 36 RBIs and 38 runs.
In Polanco's place, the Pirates moved Sean Rodriguez from first base to right field and plugged in first baseman John Jaso against Marlins left-hander Adam Conley.

• Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was examined Wednesday by Dr. Randall Beatty at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Following that meeting, the Pirates likely will decide how and when to repair the multiple facial fractures Vogelsong sustained when he was hit in the eye by a pitch on May 23.
"He is a pretty fast healer," Tomczyk said. "It's nine days after the injury. When the decision is made to fix the fractures, there is a chance that swelling's going to increase because of any soft tissue in any type of surgery. It may get a little worse before it gets better long term."
• Reliever Arquimedes Caminero (on the 15-day disabled list with a left quadriceps strain) threw off the slope of the mound Tuesday at Marlins Park and responded well, Tomczyk said. Caminero, who struggled badly with his command after a breakout season last year, could begin a Minor League rehab assignment soon.
• Elias Diaz (right elbow surgery) has begun throwing on flat ground and hitting at the club's Pirate City training complex in Bradenton, Fla. The Bucs' most Major League-ready catching prospect, Diaz has been sidelined since Spring Training due to elbow issues.
• Shortstop prospect Kevin Newman (orbital injury) will be evaluated in Pittsburgh this week. The Pirates' top Draft pick last year, Newman was placed on the seven-day DL for Class A Advanced Bradenton last week after being struck in the eye with a pitch. In Newman's place, the Pirates promoted shortstop Cole Tucker -- their first-round Draft pick in 2014 -- from Class A West Virginia to Bradenton.
• Pitching prospect Steven Brault (left hamstring strain) has been rehabbing with Triple-A Indianapolis, progressing to the point that he can play catch on flat ground.
