Prior to Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Boston Red Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for Smith on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Travis Lakins to Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Smith, 32, has made 11 appearances (two starts) over five major league stints with Boston this season, going 0-2 with one save and a 4.84 ERA (12 ER/22.1 IP). In his most recent major league outing on August 3, he allowed one run over 4.0 relief innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander has also pitched in 13 games (12 starts) for Pawtucket and gone 5-3 with a 5.48 ERA (41 ER/67.1 IP). Since making his major league debut in 2015 with Cincinnati, Smith has made 78 appearances (11 starts) for the Reds (2015-16), Athletics (2017), and Red Sox (2019), posting a 5.23 ERA (87 ER/149.2 IP).

Lakins, 25, made two appearances for Boston after being recalled from Pawtucket on August 12, both against Baltimore. He recorded a career-high three strikeouts over 2.0 scoreless innings on August 16 and allowed one unearned run over 2.0 innings on August 18. The right-hander made his major league debut this season, and has a 4.05 ERA (6 ER/13.1 IP) in nine appearances over four major league stints with the club. Originally selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2015 June Draft, Lakins has also made 36 appearances for Pawtucket in 2019, posting a 4.95 ERA (22 ER/40.0 IP) with 22 scoreless outings.
