Pomeranz, Marte, Bruce added to NL squad

Syndergaard, Cespedes and Fowler unable to play in All-Star Game

July 9th, 2016

Drew Pomeranz, Starling Marte and Jay Bruce will all be in San Diego come Tuesday. The Padres left-hander and the Pirates and Reds outfielders were added to the National League All-Star roster on Saturday as late injury replacements.
Pomeranz replaces Mets fireballer Noah Syndergaard, who is experiencing right arm fatigue. This will mark Pomeranz's first career All-Star Game, and he gets the chance to play in front of his hometown fans at Petco Park. The 27-year-old, who has a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts this season, joins Padres teammate Wil Myers as San Diego's second representative at the game.

Marte replaces another Met, center fielder Yoenis Cespedes, who strained his right quad on Friday. Marte is also making his first career All-Star appearance. The 27-year-old, an NL Final Vote candidate who ultimately finished second to the Giants' Brandon Belt, entered Saturday batting .316 with six home runs, 32 RBIs, 46 runs scored and 27 stolen bases.

Bruce, now a three-time All-Star for Cincinnati, takes the spot of Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler, who is still dealing with a strained right hamstring. The 29-year-old entered Saturday hitting .265 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs.

Terry Collins, manager of both the Mets and the NL All-Star team, saw both of his stars leave Friday's game against the Nationals due to injury. Syndergaard, who could have been a candidate to start the All-Star Game for the NL, exited in the fifth inning after seeing his velocity drop from the upper to the lower 90s. Cespedes was knocked out in the fourth after hurting himself chasing down a Daniel Murphy double in the outfield.
Fowler has not played for the Cubs since June 18, although he had begun a rehab assignment and had not ruled out an All-Star Game appearance until Saturday.
Cespedes and Fowler were both slated to start the Midsummer Classic in the NL outfield, after being voted in as starters by the fans. Due to their injuries, Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna will replace Cespedes in the starting lineup, and Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez will replace Fowler. Ozuna and Fowler were the highest-ranked NL outfielders on the player ballot.
