The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired LHP Génesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for C Sammy Hernandez.

Cabrera, 26, has appeared in 32 games for the Cardinals this season, posting a 5.06 ERA while striking out 38 batters across 32.0 innings. Signed by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013, the 6-2, 180 lb. reliever was traded to St. Louis as part of the Tommy Pham deal in 2018 and made his Major League debut with the Cardinals the following season. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has kept a 4.14 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP over 174 career games.

Hernandez, 19, has split this season between the Florida Complex League team and Single-A Dunedin, combining to bat .213 with 14 extra-base hits and 15 RBI over 42 games. The right-handed hitting catcher was selected by the Blue Jays in the 14th round of last year’s draft and took part in seven FCL contests to wrap up his summer.

To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Trent Thornton has been designated for assignment.
