Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed outfielder Andrew McCutchen (#4) to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.
McCutchen, 39, is MLB's active leader in games played (2262) and at bats (8350), while ranking highly among actives in runs (2nd, 1290), walks (2nd, 1183), and hits (3rd, 2266). A five-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger award winner, and the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 2013, McCutchen has compiled a career slash line of .271/.365/.457/.822 with 332 home runs and 1152 RBI over 17 seasons with Pittsburgh (2009-17, 2023-25), San Francisco (2018), New York-AL (2018), Philadelphia (2019-21), and Milwaukee (2022).
Since making his MLB debut in 2009, McCutchen has clubbed 332 home runs, ranking 6th among primary outfielders in that span. Only Giancarlo Stanton (453), Mike Trout (404), Aaron Judge (368), Bryce Harper (363), and Kyle Schwarber (340) have more over that stretch. McCutchen is also one of just 11 players in MLB history to slug 10-or-more home runs in each of his first 17 seasons, joining Hank Aaron, Eddie Murray, Carl Yastrzemski, Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, Frank Robinson, Harold Baines, Mickey Mantle, Jeff Kent, and Willie McCovey.
McCutchen appeared in 135 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, remaining on the active roster for the duration of the campaign and ranking 3rd on the squad in home runs (13) and RBI (57). He saw the bulk of his action at designated hitter, where he made 120 starts, along with six starts in rightfield and one in leftfield.
From 2011-15, McCutchen paced N.L. batters in wins above replacement (Baseball-Reference) with 31.4, trailing only the marks of Mike Trout (37.1) and Miguel Cabrera (32.3) for the MLB lead. During his 2013 MVP campaign, McCutchen posted 7.8 bWAR and slashed .317/.404/.508/.911 in 157 games, helping Pittsburgh snap a 20-year Postseason drought.
The Fort Meade, Fla. native was originally selected by the Pirates with the 11th overall pick of the 2005 MLB Draft from Fort Meade H.S., spending the first 13 seasons of his professional career in the Pittsburgh organization (2005-17). He rejoined the Pirates as a free agent for three seasons, 2023-25, and ranks among franchise leaders in home runs (3rd, 248), walks (4th, 885), RBI (6th, 875), hits (9th, 1781), and games played (9th, 1713).
With today's transaction, the Rangers have 58 players in the club's Major League camp: 38 members of the 40-man roster and 20 non-roster invitees.
