Latest Prospect Team of the Week

June 21st, 2021

MLB Pipeline's Prospect Team of the Week honors the best performances from the previous seven days. Any Minor Leaguer currently on an organization Top 30 Prospects list in our Prospect Rankings is eligible.

This week’s Prospect Team of the Week features five newcomers to the squad, including one Top 10 overall prospect and another who gets his Toronto Blue Jays on the board for the first time this year.

Repeat performers are led by a Twins infielder making his second straight squad and a Yankees reliever who has now made an appearance in two of the last three weeks. Add in a second appearance for a Yankees starter and New York now has seven pitching nods this year after this Prospect Team of the Week, covering games from June 14-20.

C: Gabriel Moreno, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Double-A)
(Blue Jays No. 7)

.421/.450/.947, 5 G, 10 AB, 6 R, 8 H, 1 2B, 3 HR, 10 RB, 1 BB, 2 SO

After starting his week with a modest 1-for-5 outing, Moreno went off by going 7-for-14 over his final three games, homering in each of them and driving in nine of his 10 runs for the week in those contests. The 21-year-old backstop now leads the Double-A Northeast in RBIs (40) as well as batting average (.388), OBP (.438), SLG (.690) and, of course, OPS (1.128).

Others receiving votes: Drew Romo, Fresno Grizzlies (Low-A, Rockies)

1B: Mason Martin, Altoona Curve (Double-A)
(Pirates No. 14)

.385/.407/.846, 6 G, 26 AB, 5 R, 10 H, 3 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 4 SO

This is Martin’s third Prospect Team of the Week nod in his career but first this season, as the slugger hit in all six games he played in last week. The highlight was a two-homer game on Thursday, but he also doubled, homered and drove in four runs in a three-hit performance on Saturday. Martin, who hit 35 homers in 2019, is now up to eight while slugging .532 and is currently in the top 10 in homers and RBIs while sitting 11th in SLG in the Double-A Northeast.

2B: Spencer Steer, Cedar Rapids Kernels (High-A)
(Twins No. 29)

.429/.586/.857, 6 G, 21 AB, 10 R, 9 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 7 BB, 4 SO, 1 SB, 2 CS

This is the second straight PTOW appearance for Steer, the Twins’ third-round pick in 2019. He added two more homers, one on Thursday and one on Saturday, to give him eight for the month of June, to go along with 17 RBIs in 19 games this month. His on-base skills stand out, with more walks than strikeouts this season, and his .405 OBP is fourth in the High-A Central, the main reason why he was the pick for the Twins’ future leadoff hitter.

3B: Jordan Walker, Palm Beach Cardinals (Low-A)
(Cardinals No. 6)

.364/..483/.864, 6 G, 22 AB, 8 R, 8 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 2 SO, 1 SB

Walker makes his second appearance on the PTOW, coming off the injured list on June 12 and then hitting in five of the six games he played in last week, including homers in both games over the weekend. The 19-year-old infielder clearly didn’t get the memo that Palm Beach is a tough place to hit as he now stands fourth in the Low-A Southeast in OPS (1.135) and he’s in the top 10 in average, OBP and SLG.

Others receiving votes: Sherten Apostel, Frisco RoughRiders (Double-A, Rangers)

SS: Bobby Witt Jr., Nortwest Arkansas Naturals (AA)
(Royals No. 1/MLB No. 7)

.500/.522/1.476, 5 G, 22 AB, 5 R, 11 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 3 SO, 3 SB

Witt Jr. had five straight multi-hit games, starting on Wednesday when he finished just a single shy of a cycle. He raised his average for the year 36 points and is now at .280/.352/.561, and he already has a double-double with 11 homers and 11 steals.

OF: Michael Siani, Dayton Dragons (High-A)
(Reds No. 5)

.533/.588/1.000, 5 G, 15 AB, 6 R, 8 H, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO, 4 SB

Siani capped off his turn-around week with a three-hit, two-homer performance on Sunday, a week that saw him raise his average 46 points. He’s slashed .324/.432/.676 in June, with all three of his homers this year coming this month. His four steals now put him in a tie for tenth in the High-A Central with 12.

OF: Junior Perez, Stockton Ports (Low-A)
(A’s No. 10)

.500/.643/.900, 6 G, 20 AB, 8 R, 10 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 8 BB, 3 SO, 3 SB

The 19-year-old Perez started off very slowly in both his full-season and A’s organization debut after coming via the 2020 Jorge Mateo trade, hitting just .173 in May. He’s now starting to show off all of his tools, especially in a week that started with him going 4-for-7 over his first two games with three RBIs and ended with him going 6-for-10 over his last three contests, highlighted by him falling a double short of the cycle with four RBIs on Sunday to give him a .283/.441/.528 line this month.

OF: Travis Blankenhorn, Syracuse Mets (Triple-A)
(Mets No. 22)

.375/.500/1.000, 5 G, 16 AB, 5 R, 6 H, 1 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 5 BB, 2 SO, 1 SB

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for Blankenhorn, who went from the Twins to the Dodgers to the Mariners to the Mets in a series of waiver claims. He got seven at-bats in the big leagues with the Mets before being sent down on June 11 and got right to showing New York that his bat might come in handy again. He hit in all five games he played, with four of his six hits going for extra bases, highlighted by a grand slam on Friday.

LHP: Avery Weems, Hickory Crawdads (High-A)
(Rangers No. 30)

1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 GS, 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 0.00 WHIP

Weems was perfection in his start on Saturday, retiring all 15 batters he faced over five innings, striking out seven as he continues to build up his workload. That brought his season ERA down to 3.97 over seven starts and just 22 2/3 innings, and he continues to miss bats (15.1 K/9) while walking few (2.4 BB/9) during his Rangers debut after joining the organization via the Lance Lynn trade.

Others receiving votes: Hector Yan, Tri-City Dust Devils (High-A, Angels)

RHP: Glenn Otto, Somerset Patriots (Double-A)
(Yankees No. 28)

2-0, 0.69 ERA, 2 GS, 13 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 19 SO, 0.77 WHIP

Otto nabs his second PTOW nod thanks to a pair of very strong starts, going seven innings and striking out 14 on Tuesday, then coming back with six shutout frames on Sunday. He’s now gone at least six innings in all four of his June starts and leads the Double-A Northeast with 74 strikeouts (14.2 K/9) while walking just 2.5 per nine.

RP: Albert Abreu, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A)
(Yankees No. 18)

0-0, 1 SV, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 SO, 0.75 WHIP

Abreu has already been recalled five times to help out the big league bullpen and if last week is any indication, No. 6 should come soon. The reliever had a pair of two-inning hitless outings while continuing to miss a ton of bats. He now has a 16.0 K/9 rate during his time in Triple-A while allowing just 3.7 hits per nine for a .122 BAA at that level.
