SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants reliever Will Smith (Smitty) had not given up a home run to a left-handed hitter all season. With two outs in the ninth inning of Friday's 10-inning, 7-6 win over the Giants, Rougned Odor (El Tipo) became the first.
Odor deposited Smith's slider into McCovey Cove, a two-run shot that stunned AT&T Park and brought the game to a 6-6 deadlock in the opener of this Players' Weekend series. Odor's timely blast came on the ensuing pitch after Joe Panik (J.P.) could not cleanly field Shin-Soo Choo's (추신수) grounder.

"It gave us an opportunity," manager Jeff Banister said of the error. "Then Rougned comes up in a big situation off a left-handed closer to drive the ball out of a tough ballpark to hit it out of. He got good barrel on it and hit it out."

Rangers starter Andrew Hutchison (Hutch) labored through a 31-pitch first inning and struggled with his command in the no-decision. He finished his outing after four innings and 86 pitches; just 48 were for strikes.

Walks, in particular, hampered the right-hander. Each of the four free passes Hutchison issued came around to score, including a pair of the two-out variety to Buster Posey and Panik, which extended the fourth inning and scored the Giants' fifth and sixth runs.
"The first one wasn't as frustrating, but the second one after that was," Hutchison said of the walks to Posey and Panik. "I'm disappointed I wasn't able to keep it at 4-0."
But Texas chipped away at the six-run deficit. Jurickson Profar (El Patron) broke up Dereck Rodriguez's (D-Rod) no-hitter with a single to lead off the fifth inning. After Adrian Beltre (El Koja) worked a pinch-hit walk, Profar and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (Izzy) came around to score the Rangers' first runs of the game on Shin-Soo Choo's (추신수) two-out, two-run single.

Joey Gallo (Pico de Gallo) belted his 34th home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning, that brought the Rangers to within three. His RBI single one inning later made it 6-4, although the center fielder exited after the base hit with a left ankle injury. He's day to day.

"We don't get there without the home run by Gallo, either," Banister added, "in a ballpark where it's tough to hit the ball out at this time of night."
The Rangers capitalized on an erratic Sam Dyson (Pssst) in the 10th inning. Robinson Chirinos (Pelo Buche) drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk off the former Texas closer to cap the comeback.

In the bottom half, Jose Leclerc (Pico) struck out two in his 12th consecutive scoreless inning; he's converted his last seven save opportunities. On Friday, Leclerc and the Rangers' bullpen pitched six shutout innings in relief of Hutchison.
"I think that's our 20th comeback win," Banister said. "This group of guys, it's in their DNA. They never give up, they stay in it, they don't quit. We got some quality innings from our bullpen, some timely hits and some patient at-bats late."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Cory Gearrin is familiar with the setting of Friday's game, but looked unflappable escaping the nightmare situation in which Banister entrusted him. The former Giant, acquired by Texas on July 8, entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning.
Gearrin struck out his former teammates, Brandon Belt (Bob) and Evan Longoria (Longo) to exit the inning unscathed and preserve a two-run deficit.

"Huge situation where [Gearrin] came in with the bases loaded facing a left-hander, Belt," Banister said, "a guy that's extremely challenging to strike out. He was able to make some quality pitches against a guy that I'm sure he knows well. And then to record the next out with the bases loaded. If you only give up one run, it's a quality inning for us. For him to get the two outs and go back out and give us three outs, I really thought we had an opportunity after that."

Odor put on a show in the field as well. The second baseman snared Hunter Pence's (Underpants) line drive with a sliding backhand stop and Ronald Guzman (Cepeda) picked the one-hopper at first to retire the leadoff hitter in the eighth inning.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will turn to Martin Perez (El de las Matas) (2-5, 6.93) for the second installment of a three-game series in San Francisco with the first pitch at 3:05 p.m. CT. The left-hander will be making his first career start at AT&T Park, and threw 8 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in his only outing against the Giants, back in 2015. Perez is coming off a rocky start against the Angels on Saturday, in which he was charged with six earned runs across six innings. He'll be opposed by fellow lefty Andrew Suarez (Andy) (4-9, 4.68 ERA).
