Red Sox Acquire Three Players from Pittsburgh Pirates

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego, and minor league catcher Adonys Guzman from the Pittsburgh Pirates, in exchange for outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and minor league right-handed pitcher Jesus Travieso. To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell for assignment.

Oviedo, 27, pitched in nine games for Pittsburgh in 2025, going 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA (16 ER/40.1 IP), .182 opponent batting average (26-for-143), and 42 strikeouts. The right-hander underwent right elbow UCL reconstructive surgery in December 2023 and missed the entire 2024 season. In 2023, his last full season, Oviedo posted a 4.31 ERA (85 ER/177.2 IP) with 158 strikeouts while leading the team in starts (32) and ranking eighth among National League starting pitchers in opponent batting average (.237). Originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in July 2016, the Cuba native owns a 4.24 ERA (170 ER/361.0 IP) in 81 career Major League games (67 starts) for the Cardinals (2020-22) and Pirates (2022-25).

Samaniego, 26, was selected to Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster on November 18. In 2025, the left-hander pitched in 30 minor league games (one start) and posted a 3.99 ERA (17 ER/38.1 IP) with 44 strikeouts between Single-A Bradenton (two games), High-A Greensboro (six games), and Double-A Altoona (20 games, one start). Selected by the Pirates in the 15th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Alabama native owns a 3.82 ERA (67 ER/158.0 IP) in 127 career minor league games (two starts). In 2022, he was named the Pirates’ Kent Tekulve Reliever of the Year and an MiLB.com Organization All-Star.

Guzman, 22, appeared in one game during his 2025 professional debut, starting as the catcher for Single-A Bradenton on September 6 and going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. The right-handed hitter was selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona, where he played for two seasons (2024-25) after playing one season at Boston College (2023). During the summers of 2023 and 2024, the New York native played for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Garcia, 22, played in five games for Boston in 2025, his Major League debut, making two starts in right field and one in left field. The right-handed hitter also played in 114 games between Double-A Portland (33) and Triple-A Worcester (81), batting .267 (116-for-434) with 21 home runs, 75 RBI, and an .810 OPS. Signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2019, the Venezuela native has hit .261 (352-for-1,347) with 55 home runs in 370 career minor league games. He is ranked by MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 3 prospect and the No. 85 overall prospect.

Travieso, 18, posted a 3.06 ERA (22 ER/64.2 IP) with 90 strikeouts across 19 games (16 starts) in 2025 with the Florida Complex League Red Sox (12 games, 10 starts) and Single-A Salem (7 games, 6 starts). Signed as an international free agent by the Red Sox in January 2024, the Venezuela native owns a 3.24 ERA (31 ER/86.0 IP) over 30 career minor league appearances (27 starts).

Criswell, 29, pitched in seven games (one start) for Boston in 2025, posting a 3.57 ERA (7 ER/17.2 IP) with nine strikeouts. The right-hander also posted a 3.70 ERA (27 ER/65.2 IP) in 16 games (14 starts) with Triple-A Worcester. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 13th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Georgia native owns a 4.48 ERA (77 ER/154.2 IP) in 45 career Major League games (21 starts) with the Angels (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23), and Red Sox (2024-25). He was signed by Boston as a free agent on December 13, 2023.
