BOSTON -- The rash of injuries in the infield continued for the Red Sox, as Josh Rutledge was placed on the seven-day concussion list prior to Saturday's game against the Angels.
In a subsequent roster move, infielder Tzu-Wei Lin was called up from Double-A Portland to fill Rutledge's spot, and Brock Holt was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Lin on the 40-man roster. Holt played just five games with the Red Sox before landing on the DL with vertigo April 21.
This is the first stint in the Majors for Lin, who was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent on June 16, 2012.
"Just so happy. Can't believe it," Lin said. "From Double-A to here. Not playing Triple-A. I'm so excited."
The 23-year-old hit .302 in 48 games at Double-A.
Rutledge was a late scratch from Friday's game with left hip soreness, and some follow-up tests revealed a concussion that might have been sustained as far back as Memorial Day against the White Sox.
"There was a diving play that he made in center field that day and that's the one event that he can pinpoint to that might have been the cause for it, so while he was dealing with some symptoms along the way, he felt like he was going to be able to manage them," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
"But they really manifested themselves yesterday to the point where he had to say something. The lack of focus, the loss of spin on certain pitches while he was hitting, that became more evident and then when he went through the impact testing and the assessment, there were a number of fields that they test for that indicate he's got a concussion."
Third baseman Pablo Sandoval is also on the disabled list with an inner ear infection after missing time with a right knee injury earlier in the season. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned Friday after missing three games with a deep bruise in his left lat/ribcage area. And it remains uncertain when Holt will be able to return. Utility infielder Marco Hernandez is out for the season with a left shoulder subluxation.
"Yeah, we've had our fair share of not just subtle injuries," said Farrell. "Whether it's now with the concussion to Rut, to the shoulder problem with Marco, to the knee with Panda, Pedey has been banged up with a couple of different things. Thankfully we've got guys we can turn to as needed."
Three-time All-Star Jhonny Peralta was recently signed to a Minor League deal and could help the Red Sox at some point in the near future. He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
