BOSTON -- The Red Sox are in the market for new base coaches, sources told MLB.com.
Chad Epperson, who was installed as interim third-base coach when Chad Tracy replaced Alex Cora as manager on April 26, will become the manager at Triple-A Worcester in 2027.
Tracy had served as Worcester's manager since 2022 before his promotion to the Red Sox. Iggy Suarez replaced Tracy as the Triple-A skipper for the remainder of the ‘26 season. Suarez will be Epperson’s bench coach in Worcester.
Pablo Cabrera, who was the interim first-base coach on Tracy’s staff, is returning to his former role as Minor League defensive coordinator.
MassLive was first to report the reassignments for Epperson and Cabrera.
José David Flores (bench coach), Colin Hetzler (hitting coach), Nelson Paulino (hitting coach) and Jack Simonetty (hitting assistant) are other coaches who still carry an interim label.
Flores, Tracy’s closest confidant on the staff, is all but sure to remain in place. John Soteropulos, who was an assistant hitting coach under Cora, was elevated to the head of the hitting department after the April coaching shuffle.
In addition to Cora, the Red Sox parted ways with bench coach Ramón Vázquez, hitting coach Pete Fatse, third base/outfield instructor Kyle Hudson, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and Major League hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin on April 25. In a press release that same day, the Sox said that game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek would be reassigned to a new role within the organization.
Until his dismissal from the Major League staff, Varitek, a former captain and two-time World Series champion as a player with the Red Sox, had been with the club in some capacity since his retirement in 2012. The club is still hopeful of retaining its all-time leader in games caught.
“We've connected with each other, but we've got no update on that,” said Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy on Oct. 5. “We look forward to continuing the dialogue as we go forward.”
