BOSTON -- The Red Sox had a batting barrage on Monday night at Fenway Park, riding a monster night by Jackie Bradley Jr. to a 14-7 victory over the slumping Sonny Gray and the Oakland Athletics.
Bradley's three-hit night included a grand slam and six RBIs as he ran his career-long hitting streak to 15 games.
"He's on a strong run," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Bradley. "Not only in terms of the number of basehits, but he's driving the ball consistently. A big night where he gets a couple of breaking balls up in the strike zone for a two-RBI single and then obviously the grand slam. Just a strong night offensively up and down the lineup, but particularly Jackie."
With a 4-1 lead through three innings, Gray had a golden opportunity to emerge from his early-season funk. Instead, things only got worse for him.
The Red Sox chased Gray in their breakout fourth inning, in which they sent 11 batters to the plate. Gray (3-4, 6.00 ERA) was pounded for eight hits and seven runs over 3 2/3 innings.
"He's going through a tough time," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We haven't seen him struggle like this. Everyone struggles over the course of their careers, and he'll figure a way out of it."
Travis Shaw (3-for-5, 3 runs), Brock Holt (two-run homer) and David Ortiz (two doubles) also made key contributions. Eight of Boston's nine starters had hits. Clay Buchholz labored early, but did enough to get the win, giving up six hits and four runs over five innings.

"An old saying Josh Beckett used to say was, 'Give me 12 runs and an airtight defense, and I'll take care of the rest,'" Buchholz said. "It was good to see the guys come out and hit the ball as well as they did against a guy not a whole lot of people hit the ball well against."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Bradley's bases-loaded prowess: In the past two seasons, Bradley is 6-for-8 with 15 RBIs with the bases loaded. The slam in the bottom of the sixth against John Axford was the first of his career. Bradley is 21-for-55 during his hitting streak with four homers and 17 RBIs.
"I guess I feel like they're not going to try to walk me," said Bradley. "I know that they're going to try to be around the zone. I've just got to put a good swing on one of their good pitches." More >

Sonny side down: Gray's string of struggles are disconcerting to an A's club that relies on him so much. The right-hander's velocity is a tick down from where it was at the same time last season, and all of his pitches were hit hard in Boston's six-run fourth inning. Gray has allowed 18 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings over his last three starts, with his ERA up to 6.00 after seven outings overall.
"I feel great, I'm just leaving the ball up and hovering over the middle of the plate constantly," Gray said. "You look at every ball that was put in play tonight, middle of the plate. It's just something we have to get a hold of and pretty quick." More >
Papi's double-double: It was Ortiz who started the big rally in the fourth with a double off the Green Monster. Later in the inning, Ortiz added a second double off the Monster. Big Papi now has 598 doubles, pushing him past Luis Gonzalez for 15th place on the all-time list.

Injuries pile up: A promising showing by the A's offense was overshadowed by poor pitching and a barrage of injuries. Third baseman Danny Valencia (left hamstring tightness) and second baseman Jed Lowrie, who fouled a ball off of his right foot, departed the game early, and right-hander Axford, who surrendered Bradley Jr.'s grand slam, took a line drive off of his foot.
"It was not a good day on our side, and obviously on the mound it started with me," Gray said. "Then we had some guys get banged up. Not pretty for us." More >

Athletics: The A's will have rookie Sean Manaea on the mound for Tuesday's 4:10 p.m. PT matchup with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The left-handed Manaea allowed four runs in five innings in each of his first two big league starts, totaling nine strikeouts and five walks in that span.
Red Sox: Sean O'Sullivan makes his first start for the Red Sox on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET. It could be a one-start stint for the veteran right-hander, who will be making his 53rd career start and first since July 6, 2015.
