Yanks, Sox swap defensive gems in the 1st
In the top of the first inning of Saturday's Red Sox-Yankees tilt in the Bronx, which Boston would go on to win 7-3, it looked like Xander Bogaerts had an easy single with a hit down the third-base line. But Gio Urshela had other ideas, as he fielded the ball and then went well into foul territory to execute a splendid throw to nab Bogaerts at first.
The apparent ease with which Urshela was able to make the ranging throw makes it all the more impressive, as his body's momentum was traveling the opposite direction of the throw.
However, in the bottom of the frame Boston was set to respond with its own web gem (or web .... something) as the Red Sox infield somehow pulled off a 6-4-3 play to get Aaron Judge at first base. That's right: A 6-4-3 that wasn't a double play.
Judge smoked the ball towards the left side of the infield, contact measured at 109 mph off his bat, and it looked like a sure bet to get through to the outfield for a single. But Bogaerts was able to block the ball with his glove, sending it flying for second baseman Marwin Gonzalez to flawlessly catch mid-air and throw to first.
