Reds add reliever Carle on Minors deal

February 11th, 2021

CINCINNATI -- In another depth move made on Thursday, the Reds agreed to terms with right-handed reliever on a Minor League contract. Carle was invited to Spring Training as a non-roster player.

Most recently in the Rangers’ organization, Carle did not pitch in the big leagues during the 2020 season. He enjoyed a strong season in 2018 with the Braves, when he posted a 2.86 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 53 appearances.

The 2019 season was a complete struggle for Carle, who had a 9.64 ERA in six games and a 5.13 ERA in 20 games at Triple-A before he was designated for assignment and acquired by Texas.

Carle, 29, had effective breaking pitches working for him in ’18, as batters hit just .179 against his slider and .107 against his curveball. According to Statcast, his four-seam fastball averaged 94.8 mph.

Cincinnati has added several relief pitchers over the past month, including Art Warren, Hector Pérez and Cionel Pérez, who are all on the 40-man roster.
