GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Continuing his efforts to make the big league rotation, Cody Reed gave the Reds another three scoreless innings but the split-squad Mariners came away with a 5-2 victory on Saturday.
Seattle scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning against Cincinnati reliever Carlos Contreras, including an RBI single by Dae-Woo Lee and a three-run home run by Tyler O'Neill.
Reed allowed one infield hit off of his glove and struck out four during his outing -- his third of spring and his second start. He also worked three scoreless the last time out on Monday.
"I felt good," Reed said. "Actually in the bullpen [pregame], I felt kind of off a little bit. I was cutting across my body and I decided to just slow down. Finally when I got out there, it kind of all came together. I got behind in a couple of counts, but I got back ahead, a lot of swing and misses and quick outs."
In his Cactus League debut for Seattle, Mike Montgomery worked three scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Also trying to pitch his way into the big league rotation, Montgomery was held back earlier in camp after he had a cyst surgically removed from his neck.
The game's first run didn't cross until the sixth. Against Reds reliever Blake Wood, Shawn O'Malley hit a triple to left-center field out of the reach of a diving Phillip Ervin. O'Malley scored on Luis Sardinas' RBI single to short center field.
Starting at shortstop for the Reds, Jose Peraza went 3-for-3 with three singles. Joey Votto reached twice, including a lined single to right-center field in the sixth. Peraza and Votto both scored on Jay Bruce's game-tying, two-run triple off of the wall in right field.
Up next for Mariners: Right-hander Nathan Karns makes his third spring start on Sunday in a 1:10 p.m. PT game against the Reds at Peoria Stadium. Karns, acquired from the Rays by trade, has a 1.80 ERA in five innings as he battles for the final spot in Seattle's rotation. He's slated for four innings, followed by Joe Wieland, Mayckol Guaipe and Blake Parker in a game that will be televised live on MLB.TV and Root Sports.
Up next for Reds: The Reds will face the Mariners again at 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, but this time will travel to Peoria. Three of the four regular infielders will be on the trip, including Brandon Phillips at second base, Zack Cozart at shortstop and Eugenio Suarez at third base. This will be Cozart's second game back from knee surgery last year. Anthony DeSclafani is the scheduled starting pitcher in a game live on MLB.TV.
