Reds have another top prospect mashing really long homers

July 21st, 2023

A top Reds middle infield prospect cranks a baseball out of the stadium, so far it nearly hits the overpass beyond the outfield wall — heard that one before?

No, we’re not talking about Elly De La Cruz.

Following De La Cruz's recent graduation from MLB Pipeline's Reds Top 30 Prospects list, ascended to the No. 1 slot. Yes, another dynamic infielder, and one who recently earned a promotion to Triple-A Louisville.

Marte celebrated that progress in dramatic fashion Thursday, belting his first homer for Louisville a Statcast-projected 464 feet in the Bats’ 11-6 loss to Columbus. He also showed his patience by drawing three walks, finishing the night 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The 21-year-old, who had eight homers in 50 games for Double-A Chattanooga prior to his promotion, led off the bottom of the seventh inning by yanking right-hander Jhon Romero’s first pitch around the left-field foul pole, clearing the back wall of Louisville Slugger Field with a blast that threatened traffic outside the ballpark.

Now that’s how you make a statement with your first Triple-A home run. And it also begs a question about the Reds’ seemingly endless supply of top middle infield prospects.

How many can one organization have?

Cincinnati has been the talk of the baseball world as the surprise NL Central leaders, having promoted five top prospects this summer, including three infielders: sensation De La Cruz, former top-five prospect and current No. 4 .

Then there is Marte, acquired from the Mariners in the Luis Castillo trade at the 2022 Trade Deadline and currently the game’s No. 16 overall prospect per MLB Pipeline. Thursday's raw power display is Marte's calling card and he’s shown it off a lot as he’s risen from A-ball to Triple-A in less than two years, with 28 homers in 182 games since the start of the '22 season.

A natural shortstop, Marte began playing third base in the Arizona Fall League last November as the Reds prepared for De La Cruz’s impending arrival. He manned the hot corner regularly at Double-A and has played it exclusively since joining Louisville, making all 14 of his starts there while hitting .298 with a .835 OPS at the level so far.

All told, the 21-year-old Marte has compiled a slash line of .282/.351/.462 with nine homers, 47 runs, 34 RBIs and 13 steals in 67 games across three levels this season. Thursday's dinger was only the fifth-longest for Louisville this season, largely because De La Cruz and Encarnacion-Strand lit up the leaderboards before moving on to The Show.
