Quinn's Double-A HBP likely 'not a major thing'

June 15th, 2019

ATLANTA -- ’s return to the Phillies hit a snag Friday when he got hit by a pitch on his left shoulder in a rehab assignment with Double-A Reading.

He could have been activated from the injured list as early as Saturday. It is unclear how this latest development might set him back.

“He’s OK, honestly,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. “This is much more precautionary.”

Quinn has been on the IL since April 25 because of a strained right groin. He said he felt some discomfort finishing his swing after the pitch hit him in the first inning. He remained in the game, going 0-for-4. Quinn planned to go through his pregame routine with Reading on Saturday, and he would be evaluated afterward.

“We don’t see this as being a major thing,” Kapler said.

Right-hander is expected to be activated from the IL before Sunday’s series finale against the Braves at SunTrust Park. He has been on the IL since May 24 because of a strained right shoulder.

J.T. is a horse
Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto started his 14th consecutive game Saturday night, with two off-days during that stretch. Realmuto is on pace to start 139 games, which would be the fourth-highest total for a catcher in Phillies history. Darren Daulton started 143 games behind the plate in 1993. Bob Boone started 142 in ‘74 and 141 in ‘73.

Mike Lieberthal started 138 in 1999.

“It’s blinking brightly,” Kapler said, asked how much Realmuto’s workload is on his radar. “It’s a conversation that I have with him frequently. He’s on a pace to play a lot of baseball games. We have an off-day that we’re thinking about coming up for him in the next couple days, and we know that we don’t have many scheduled off-days coming up so we’re going to have to get him one.”

Irvin on Sunday, but when?
Triple-A left-hander Cole Irvin, Philadelphia's No. 16 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will be recalled and pitch Sunday, but Kapler stopped short of saying in what situation. It is possible he starts, but it also is possible the Phillies use an opener and Irvin follows him.
