Acuna's theatrical grab wins Play of the Week

August 19th, 2019

has spent much of the season showing off each of his five tools. While the 21-year-old Braves outfielder has made headlines for his power hitting and speed as he seeks to become the second-youngest player to record a 30-homer/30-steal campaign, it was Acuna’s glove that earned him the MLB Play of the Week presented by W.B. Mason.

The second-year star made a jaw-dropping leaping snag up against the left-field wall to rob the Mets’ J.D. Davis of what would have been a clear home run in the top of the sixth inning on Thursday.

Although Atlanta was losing, 9-2, at the time, the ridiculous athleticism and timing Acuna displayed to make the grab brought plenty of life to SunTrust Park. Not to mention, Acuna added a little of his signature flair with a nonchalant reaction, as he initially landed on his backside on the warning track and didn’t immediately reveal he had caught the ball.

Acuna’s impressive sophomore campaign on both offense and defense has helped push the Braves’ lead in the National League East to 5 1/2 games over the Washington Nationals entering play Monday. Atlanta is seeking its second straight division crown.
