Expectations and a name with Major League lineage can blur the reality that Bobby Witt Jr. just celebrated his 21st birthday while competing in his 71st game as a professional. Of course, performances like he had Wednesday only add to the aura surrounding his tantalizing projectability.

MLB's No. 7 overall prospect fell a single shy of the cycle as part of his second three-hit performance in a week as Double-A Northwest Arkansas edged San Antonio, 3-2. Witt's performance continues a month-long trend that has seen him raise his average 79 points since May 16.

After notching two hits in his previous 14 at-bats, including an 0-for-6 showing on Sunday, the top Royals prospect kicked off his evening with a line-drive triple to right-center field, his second three-bagger of the season. He cleared the fence in the fourth for his 11th home run and added a broken-bat double in the ninth to secure his fourth three-hit game of the year. Witt has now hit safely in 10 of the 12 games he's played this month, batting .300/.375/.660 with eight extra-base hits in 50 at-bats.

That stands in stark contrast to his first month, when a slow start had the son of former Major Leaguer Bobby Witt batting .178 in mid-May. However, Witt hit safely in six of seven games and finished the month with a flourish, going deep in consecutive games, including the first three-homer game of his career on May 30. Beginning with a 1-for-4 outing on May 16, Witt has hit .294 with 10 of his 11 home runs and 15 of his 19 RBIs.

Overall, the Colleyville, Texas, native is batting .257 with 16 extra-base hits and an .878 OPS in 34 games with Northwest Arkansas. Kansas City has been aggressive with its 2019 first-round Draft pick. Witt made his professional debut that summer in the Arizona League and spent last summer at the club's alternate training site.

Buoyed by an impressive Spring Training where he batted .289/.325/.526 in 14 Cactus League games, Witt was assigned to Double-A to begin the year despite being more than four years younger than the average player at that level.
