Royals' '85 and '15 teams in Dream Bracket 2

May 20th, 2020

KANSAS CITY -- The 1985 Royals, who went on to capture the first World Series championship in franchise history, was a team loaded with established stars from Hall of Famer George Brett to Frank White to Willie Wilson.

That team also featured rising stars, such as right-hander Bret Saberhagen, who went on to win his first of two Cy Youngs that season, and a veteran in Steve Balboni, who posted a career year with a then franchise-record 36 home runs.

That Royals team, along with the 2015 World Series champion Royals, will be featured in MLB’s Dream Bracket 2: Dream Seasons, which will begin simulated play on Thursday.

The MLB Dream Bracket 2 is a 64-team best-of-seven simulation featuring two all-time teams from each of the 30 current Major League franchises (post-World War II), as well as three Negro Leagues teams and the 1994 Montreal Expos.

The finals will take place from June 8-9, and will feature the top teams from the American League and National League squaring off against each other. Select game simulations will be streamed live on MLB.com, as well as the MLB Network and MLB Twitch channels. MLB Network’s Scott Braun and Jon Paul Morosi will provide play-by-play analysis for the livestreamed games.

The 1985 Royals, who famously came back from down three games to one in both the AL Championship Series and the World Series, will start out by facing the '72 Oakland A’s, a team loaded with stars of its own from Reggie Jackson to Vida Blue to Rollie Fingers. That A’s team won the World Series in seven games over the Reds.

If the 1985 Royals win that matchup, they will play the winner of the game between the 2005 Astros and the '54 Indians.

The 2015 Royals will open play against the '01 Mariners, who set an AL record with 116 victories. That Seattle team featured Ichiro Suzuki, who hit .350, and Bret Boone, who belted 37 home runs and was managed by former Royal Lou Piniella. That Mariners team lost in the ALCS in five games to the Yankees.

If the 2015 Royals win that game, they will play the winner of the matchup between the 1984 Tigers and the '88 A’s.

Fans can make their picks in the MLB Dream Bracket 2: Dream Seasons Challenge and compete to win an MLB prize pack featuring a $500 Fanatics gift card and more.
