CHICAGO -- Monday afternoon's Royals-White Sox game was suspended after rain forced two lengthy delays, the last coming with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the score tied at 1.
The game will resume at that point at 4:40 p.m. CT today prior to the regularly scheduled game, which will start 30-40 minutes after the suspended game is over.
“I’ve got to give a shoutout to the umpires,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “I thought [crew chief] Bill Miller did a fantastic job trying to get us through five innings, but the weather wouldn’t cooperate.”
The Royals took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Adalberto Mondesi slapped a double down the left-field line with one out. With two outs, Hunter Dozier, who singled in the second, drove another single to left, scoring Mondesi.
Royals right-hander Homer Bailey gave up singles to James McCann and Jose Rondon sandwiched around a strikeout when the first rain delay hit. That delay lasted two hours and 55 minutes.
Play resumed briefly with left-hander Brian Flynn taking over for Bailey. Flynn gave up an RBI single to Yolmer Sanchez, though Rondon was thrown out after rounding second base.
Moments later, the umpiring crew again waved the players off the field.
Yost and the Royals' worn-out bullpen got some good news, though. With an extra day of rest, Yost likely will have two or more relievers available on Tuesday who were unavailable on Monday.
“Hopefully, yes,” Yost said.
