Salvy top vote-getter; Royals claim 4 All-Stars

July 5th, 2016

TORONTO -- Royals catcher Salvador Perez, who was the leading vote-getter in both leagues, and Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer were voted in as starters for the American League in the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard.
Perez, who is hitting .273 with 12 homers and 37 RBIs, will be making his fourth straight All-Star appearance.
"It means a lot," Perez said of the fan vote. "I want to thank the fans and the people who voted for me. I think it's really exciting to see a lot of people like what you do."

Added Royals and AL manager Ned Yost, "Four All-Star appearances in a row is pretty special. People just like him. He's a guy who loves playing the game and they love his smile and his enthusiasm."
In addition, closer Wade Davis was voted in by the players, and right-hander Kelvin Herrera was a manager's selection by Yost. The Royals had seven All-Stars last season.

Davis went on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and will not be able to participate in the All-Star Game on July 12 at Petco Park. Davis said he would not attend the game, either, and would stay in Kansas City over the break to get treatment and throw bullpen sessions.
Hosmer will be making his first All-Star appearance.

"It's really exciting," Hosmer said. "It's just a tremendous honor to be recognized by the fans, not just in Kansas City, but all over the world. Just looking at the roster, it's an honor to share the same locker room as them. I'm really looking forward to the experience."
Added Yost, "It just shows his growth and development as an All-Star player. Being an All-Star, you're the best of the best, and you'll forever be known as an All-Star."
Hosmer is hitting .305 with 13 homers and a team-high 49 RBIs.
"I was going to do everything I could do to get him on this team, anyway," Yost said. "But I didn't need to. He won the fan vote. He finished at the top or near the top in the player voting, too."
Herrera posted a 1.40 ERA through 39 games.
