Royals move Lopez to rotation, Skoglund to 'pen

September 4th, 2019

KANSAS CITY -- After one good start and one shaky one, Royals left-hander will be moved out of the rotation, and he will be replaced by right-hander , manager Ned Yost said.

Skoglund has an 8.00 ERA in two starts.

“[Pitching coach] Cal [Eldred] wants to work with Skogie on some things,” Yost said. “For now, he’ll be our long man.”

Lopez, who will take the mound on Friday against the Marlins in Miami, has looked better in his last two starts. He gave up one run in five innings during a recent start in Baltimore, and then he gave up just one run through four innings against the Orioles at Kauffman Stadium before giving up three runs in the fifth, though two of those runs came after he was removed.

“He’s pitching better,” Yost said. “It comes down to who is pitching the best will get their shot.”

More callups

The Royals on Tuesday selected the contracts of first baseman Ryan McBroom, infielder/outfielder Erick Mejia, and left-hander Gabe Speier. Also, right-hander Jesse Hahn (elbow repair surgery) was reinstated from his rehab assignment.

The Royals now are at their 40-man limit.

McBroom, acquired from the Yankees on Saturday night for international pool money, made his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Tigers and he got his first big league hit, a single to right-center in the second inning. He had 29 doubles and 26 home runs for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate and led the International League with a .976 OPS.

Speier was part of the 2018 trade with the D-backs for outfielder Jon Jay. Splitting time between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, Speier had a 4.48 ERA, but he had 73 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings.

Mejia hit .271 with 22 doubles and seven home runs in 128 games at Omaha.

Hahn has not pitched for the Royals since being acquired from the A's in January 2018 in the Brandon Moss trade. Hahn is recovering from elbow repair surgery, a less invasive UCL repair technique than Tommy John surgery.
