ST. PETERSBURG -- This is the type of offense Royals manager Ned Yost envisioned when the season began.

The Royals manufactured some runs with their speed and powered home some others with home runs in a 10-2 triumph over the Rays on Wednesday, salvaging the final game of the series at Tropicana Field and snapping a five-game losing streak. The 10 runs were a season high.

The Royals got a three-run home run from Adalberto Mondesi and a solo shot from Whit Merrifield. Mondesi tied a career high with four RBIs.

The Royals also manufactured a run in the fourth when Chris Owings walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a safety squeeze bunt single by Cam Gallagher. It was Gallagher’s second safety squeeze single this season.

“I was pleased that we continued to tack on runs,” Yost said. “Guys were running all over the place. Plus the power, Mondi just crushed a homer.”

Mondesi’s home run turned a 5-1 game into a comfortable 8-1 lead.

“That’s a huge home run there,” Yost said. “We just kept trying to break it open, break it open. That one gave us some breathing room.”

Speedster Billy Hamilton also added an RBI double and an RBI triple.

Royals starter Jakob Junis left after five innings after getting hit in the right hand by a line drive from Yandy Diaz. Junis went five innings and gave up four hits and one run while striking out six.

Junis was diagnosed with a contusion but said he feels he will be able to make his next start. X-rays were negative.

"I got some treatment on it,” Junis said. “It's just a little swollen right now, nothing broken though. So we're good. I got the off-day tomorrow to rest it. Come back the next day and see how it feels. Hopefully, I won't have to miss any time."

Diaz's line drive came with runners on first and second and one out in the fifth in a 4-1 game. Junis was able to recover the liner and start a 1-4-3 double play.

“He hit it right back at me, and it was like my hand kind of crept inside my glove and clipped my pinkie,” Junis said. “Luckily, it dropped right by my feet. I didn't hesitate, went straight to second and got the double play and got out of the inning, so it was huge."

Hill optioned, Duffy activated
After the game, the Royals optioned left-hander Tim Hill back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for left-hander Danny Duffy, who will be activated from the 10-day injured list and start Friday’s game against the Angels. Hill was recalled earlier this week and pitched two innings Tuesday, giving up one run.
