MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers were mulling the next step for left fielder Ryan Braun after an MRI scan on Thursday revealed a left calf strain, the latest in a series of injuries that has hobbled the six-time All-Star since the start of May.
Braun, who also underwent an MRI over the weekend for a flexor muscle strain in his right elbow, said he had another on Thursday for his calf. Braun said he expected the team to release more details on Friday before the Brewers open a series at home against the Mets.
"It's a tough combination to continue to be productive when you can't really throw or run," Braun said.
After missing the previous week with the arm injury, Braun returned to Milwaukee's starting lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Red Sox, but he was clearly limited throwing. The calf, he said, began to get tight during Tuesday's victory, and it got worse in the early innings of another Brewers win on Wednesday.
The MRI revealed a strain, Braun said, but it was "nowhere near as bad" as the one that felled starting pitcher Junior Guerra in the third inning on Opening Day. Guerra is still on the DL, though he is slated to begin a Minor League rehabilitation assignment on Monday.
"I think the smart decision becomes to not let it get significantly worse," Braun said. "That was kind of the way it went down."
Said manager Craig Counsell: "We're going to have to look at what the best option is."
If Braun is placed on the 10-day disabled list, the Brewers have a deep crop of outfielders at Triple-A Colorado Springs that includes top prospect Lewis Brinson and fellow Top 30 Brewers prospects Brett Phillips and Ryan Cordell.
