MINNEAPOLIS -- Royals rookie Ryan McBroom hasn’t been exactly overwhelmed yet by the competition in the big leagues.

McBroom, who was acquired from the Yankees earlier this month, actually doesn’t see a massive gap in the talent level between Triple-A and the Majors.

“I think the biggest adjustment I’ve had to make is just getting to know everyone,” McBroom said. “It’s a new team, new organization, new coaching staff. It’s been a transition.

“But as far as the actual competition goes, it’s close to the same. It’s the same preparation I’ve always done.

“[The pitching] is probably more consistent up here. And there are more top-end arms, especially when you play someone like Houston. But it’s still the same game. It’s still baseball.”

McBroom certainly hasn’t looked overmatched at the plate. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Royals' 12-5 win over the Twins on Saturday night at Target Field -- raising his average to .321.

Known as a power hitter in the Minors -- McBroom hit 26 home runs at Triple-A this season -- he said he expects the slugging percentage will jump with experience.

“And truthfully, I’m not really thinking about [home runs],” McBroom said. “I’m just trying to win games.”

McBroom had a career-high three hits in Friday’s 4-3 loss at Target Field. The key for him, he said, is just not overanalyzing each plate appearance.

“For sure, the key is not thinking as much,” he said. “I think that’s when everyone is at their best, when you put all the thinking aside and just compete. That’s what I’m here to do.”

The Royals want to take an extensive look at McBroom, who has played in 17 games.

“It’s important to find out what we have with guys like him,” manager Ned Yost said. “And I like what I’ve seen in a small sample so far. I like his swing.”

Yost is having McBroom split time between the outfield and first base, which suits McBroom just fine.

“I played about half the games in the outfield at Triple-A,” McBroom said. “And I played a lot of outfield in winter ball, too. It’s nothing new for me. I’m comfortable out there and at first base. It’s whereever I can get in the lineup.”
