SEATTLE -- Mariners first baseman Ryon Healy is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 months after undergoing surgery on his right hip on Tuesday in Palo Alto, Calif.

Healy has been on the injured list since May 20 due to lower back pain. His initial issue was diagnosed as spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spine. After going to the Mariners' facility in Peoria, Ariz., to rehab that injury, Healy continued to experience lower back pain and went to Stanford University for further tests.

Tuesday’s surgery to repair a debridement in his hip was performed by Dr. Marc Safron, an orthopedic specialist. The hip issue was believed to be leading to transferred pain in the lower back.

Healy opened the season as Seattle’s starting third baseman while Kyle Seager was sidelined by a left hand injury. Healy posted a .237/.289/.456 line with 16 doubles, seven homers and 26 RBIs in 47 games before going on the 10-day injured list and eventually being transferred to the 60-day IL.

Healy was acquired by Seattle from the A’s in 2018 and started at first base last season for the Mariners, hitting .235 with 24 homers and 73 RBIs. The four-year veteran has a career line of .261/.298/.452 line with 69 home runs in 401 games.

The University of Oregon graduate is earning $579,000 this season and has three seasons of arbitration eligibility remaining with the Mariners.
